Pedro Matos is the Cooper Bicentennial Chair Professor of Business Administration (Finance) at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business (UVA Darden).
His research focuses on the growing importance of institutional investors in financial markets worldwide, with particular attention to corporate governance and responsible investing.
His research has been published in leading academic journals and featured in major media outlets (including in The Economist, Financial Times, The New York Times, Bloomberg). It has also been cited by policymakers and regulators, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the European Commission. His work has received numerous research grants and awards.
Matos is a research associate at the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI), Vice-Chair of the Academic Network Advisory Committee of the UN-sponsored Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and a member of the Commission for Monitoring of the Corporate Governance Code of the Portuguese Corporate Governance Institute (IPCG).
At UVA Darden, Matos has authored numerous case studies and received the Wells Fargo Award for Excellence in Course Material Development (twice), the Wells Fargo Award for Outstanding Research Publication and the Darden Multiyear Publications Award. He previously taught at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business, where he received a Golden Apple teaching award.
He holds a B.A. in economics from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a Ph.D. in finance from INSEAD. Prior to his Ph.D., he worked with the Portuguese Ministry of Finance and consulted for the World Bank.
